Getting Started
About a year before we opened, we went to Chicago to find out about the America's Mattress program.
We were quite impressed and excited, but still hesitant. After monitoring our bedding business at our
furniture store for the following six months, we found that we jus weren't able to capture as much of
the market as we wanted and thought that opening a bedding specialty store would fill the gap and give
us the growth we were looking for.
Reputation is Key
The thing that impressed me the most about our America's Mattress store after opening was the
simplicity! After 20+ years in the furniture business, it was and continues to be a joy to wrok that
store since EVERY person that walks through the door wants to buy, and not only wants to buy, but
prefers to buy from a "Mattress Store" (as stated by customers). Our average ticket is better than that
of the furniture store and deliveries are simple, quick, and less costly.
Simplicity
The other wonderful thing is that I really only need to place two to three orders a week! One for Serta,
one for frames, and one for mattress protectors. Can it get much easier? While it took only nine months to
move past break even, we are now enjoying the fruits of our labor.
Keys to Success
The two key ingredients in our view are: advertising alot and consistently, and having the right person in
the box! As long as you aren't willing to accept mediocrity, and are willing to take guidance from your Serta
representative, success is there. The old saying that one should put their money where their mouth is, is
quite valid. So, true to those words we now have three America's Mattress stores with plans for more.

We opened our first America's Mattress store in November, 2004. The support we recieved from Serta was
outstanding. This actually was our first venture into retail, but with alot of help from our Serta representative
we soon had the best looking Sleep Shop in Hickory, NC and the largest selection of Serta products in a 4 county
area. We have recently opened our third America's Mattress and hope to make it four shortly.

The Joy of Family
We chose America's Mattress because it gave us the cahnce to open our own local business with the support of a
national bedding manufacturere. Having an Americas' Matterss store ahs produced more income for our family and
allows me more time to spend with them. We get important and helpful guidance regarding everything from
advertising to general business ideas from both the America's Mattress team and our local Serta Plant.

Support to Grow
The America's Mattress program has definitely met and exceeded my expectations. I started five years ago and what
I have achieved through the program is more than I could have imagined. We went from eight stores to sixteen and
then opened another market! Times were tough the first years, but with the support of the America's Mattress program,
we were able to achieve success.
Specifically, the support that I recieved and appreciate the most is in the form of advertising guidance,
knowledge of market operations, and training on sales and product. They provide support on everything from day to
day activities to customized business plans. This growth of business has allowed me to earn more money each year
